Safeguarding Living Heritage for Resilience: Empowering Gales Point
On 2 November 2025, the Institute for Social and Cultural Research (NICH–ISCR) advanced its work under the UNESCO project “Capacity Building for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage in Emergencies in Small Island Developing States in the Pacific and the Caribbean.”
Through this project, communities like Gales Point Village are being empowered to document and safeguard their living heritage, knowledge and practices that strengthen resilience and guide disaster preparedness and recovery.
Our community gathering was focused on understanding:
✅ What is Living Heritage?
✅ What are the links between Disasters and Living Heritage?
✅ How do communities document living heritage?
We thank the Gales Point Village Council, residents and the National Kriol Council for partnering with us.
Funded by the UNESCO Japan Funds-in-Trust, this project highlights how our living heritage can be a powerful tool for resilience.
